Chapter Fifteen

Alexis

I was hoping to be able to sleep off the effects of the bachelorette party by the next morning, but that didn’t happen. I woke up enough to say goodbye to the ladies as they headed home, but then fell right back to sleep. They should have just stayed here and made a weekend out of it, but Gabriela had wedding planning appointments, Valerie had a doctor’s appointment, and the others had family obligations that were keeping them from just taking all the time off. I understood, but it would have been nice to just be able to hang out for the whole weekend like we used to when we were younger and didn’t have children, husbands, and careers to think about.

Not that I’d want them to give up those things in their lives. I knew how much they meant to them. Tracy was an amazing stepmother to her husband’s children. Sarah took care of her elderly grandparents and spent all her free time volunteering. They were the best kinds of obligations and I was proud of all my friends. But I also missed all the time we got to spend together.

And if I was being really honest with myself, I’d admit I was worried that time was only going to get less and less. I didn’t want to say it to any of them, I barely even wanted to say it to myself, but there was a voice in the back of my head when I watched them with their families or heard them talking about all the amazing things they were doing, that said I was being left behind.

I didn’t always feel that way. This was the path I’d chosen and exactly what I wanted in my life. The career I’d aspired to and was making better all the time. The home that was the dream I carried and the marker I’d placed in front of myself as what would tell me I’d finally made it. I was an adult and building my own life.

Those times didn’t always drown out the ones of doubt, though. I still wondered what it was going to be like when Gabriela got married and Valerie had her baby and suddenly Sarah and I were the only ones unmarried and without children, and I was the only one without anything but myself. While my friends were creating their own little mommy and me groups and sharing couple dates, I wondered how I was going to fit in.

That Saturday after the bachelorette party, though, I didn’t get a whole lot of time to dwell in those thoughts. I fell back to sleep after they left, only to be woken up a couple of hours later by a call from Gabriela.

She sounded absolutely frantic.

“Alex, I don’t know what I’m going to do. What am I going to do?”

Sleep was still fogging my brain as I tried to figure out what she was talking about. I thought maybe she’d told me something and I’d just forgotten it.
